Would 49ers really ditch Brock Purdy for 41-year-old QB?

Posted on April 20, 2025 by admin

It wouldn’t be a San Francisco 49ers offseason without a harebrained idea for their quarterback situation.

Despite QB Brock Purdy having the backing of general manager John Lynch, team captain Fred Warner and team CEO Jed York, odds generated by NBC list the 49ers as the No. 3 favorite to land New York Jets QB Aaron Rodgers in the offseason.

The Jets plan to release Rodgers, putting him on the free agent market in 2025. Here’s what NBC’s odds look like:

Pittsburgh Steelers +200

Las Vegas Raiders +300

San Francisco 49ers +350

Minnesota Vikings +400

Indianapolis Colts +650

Los Angeles Rams +850

This has to be because the 49ers have been linked to Rodgers when he was previously available (or perceived to be available). Their pursuit of Rodgers came at a much different time for the QB and the club, though.

It’s also not the same as their short-lived Tom Brady pursuit after the 2022 season. At that point Purdy was dealing with a catastrophic elbow injury after his rookie season, and Brady was coming off a year where he threw for nearly 4,700 yards with 25 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Purdy is now entrenched as the 49ers’ franchise QB while Rodgers has dealt with an Achilles tear and subpar production in his last two healthy seasons.

Given the insanity of the 49ers QB room, it’s impossible to rule anything completely out, but the odds certainly feel much longer than the ones NBC listed.
