ICYMI: Svechnikov breaks a late tie as the Hurricanes top the Capitals 3-1 to advance to the Eastern Conference Final

RALEIGH, NC — In case you missed it, Andrei Svechnikov just delivered one of the most electric moments of the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs — and Hurricanes fans won’t be forgetting it anytime soon.

With just over two minutes remaining in regulation and the game deadlocked at 1-1, Svechnikov blasted home the go-ahead goal in front of a deafening crowd at PNC Arena, breaking the tie and propelling the Carolina Hurricanes to a thrilling 3-1 win over the Washington Capitals. The victory seals the series for the Canes, who now punch their ticket to the Eastern Conference Final for the second time in three years.

“That’s what big-time players do in big-time moments,” said head coach Rod Brind’Amour postgame, clearly emotional. “Svech has battled all season long, and for him to come up clutch like that — it’s just incredible.”

Back-and-Forth Battle Until the End

The game was a nail-biter from puck drop. Carolina opened the scoring early in the first thanks to a nifty deflection by Martin Nečas, but the Capitals wouldn’t go quietly. A gritty second-period goal by Tom Wilson brought Washington level, and from there, both teams traded blows in a tense, high-speed chess match.

Goaltenders Frederik Andersen and Charlie Lindgren stood tall through it all, making highlight-reel saves and keeping their teams alive deep into the third.

But then came Svechnikov.

With 2:13 left on the clock and Carolina buzzing in the offensive zone, the Russian winger found a soft spot in the slot and ripped a one-timer past Lindgren’s blocker, sending the crowd into absolute chaos. Just seconds later, Sebastian Aho sealed it with an empty-netter, officially ending the Capitals’ season and beginning Carolina’s celebration.

What’s Next for Carolina?

The Hurricanes will now rest up and prepare for the winner of the Rangers–Panthers series, which has been just as tightly contested. No matter the opponent, one thing is certain: this Hurricanes team is fast, fearless, and looks built for a deep run.

And if Svechnikov keeps playing like this? The Stanley Cup might just be coming to Carolina.

After one warning in a game, the team precipitating the warning will be issued a bench minor penalty for future violations.
