“Zakai Zeigler Makes History: Shatters SEC Single-Season Assist Record, Earns All-SEC & All-American Honors, Puts Tennessee Basketball on the Map”

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Tennessee point guard Zakai Zeigler continues to make history in his senior year on Rocky Top.

After winning SEC Defensive Player of the Year for the second year in a row, he added a new SEC offensive record to his long list of accolades on Friday.

The Long Island native broke the SEC record for the most assists in a single season during Tennessee’s Sweet 16 clash with Kentucky. The previous record of 260 set by Sean Tuohy of Ole Miss had stood since the 1979-1980 season.

Zeigler broke Tennessee’s single-season assist record during the Round of 32 win over Texas. He is the program’s all-time leader in career assists and steals. No other Tennessee Volunteer has recorded more assists in NCAA Tournament play.

Only three other players in SEC history have recorded 700 career assists.

On the defensive end, he is the first four-time All-SEC Defensive Team designee in league history and is just the third player to win SEC Defensive Player of the Year multiple times.
