Kirk Cousins opens up about feeling blindsided by the Falcons’ draft move..see more ….

Posted on July 9, 2025 by admin

In a stunning turn of events that has sparked widespread reaction throughout the NFL community, Atlanta Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins has finally broken his silence about the team’s controversial decision to draft a quarterback in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft—just weeks after signing Cousins to a massive four-year deal worth $180 million.

During a candid and emotional press conference on Monday, Cousins revealed the raw emotions he experienced the night the Falcons used the No. 8 overall pick to select University of Washington star QB Jalen Daniels. It was a move that shocked not only Falcons fans, but also the veteran quarterback himself.

“I’m not going to lie, I was surprised,” Cousins admitted. “Nobody gave me a heads-up. I found out the same time the rest of the world did. It caught me off guard.”

The franchise’s decision has cast an awkward shadow over what was supposed to be a fresh start for Cousins in Atlanta. After spending six seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, Cousins inked his deal with the Falcons in March, and expectations were sky-high. Team officials had praised his leadership, poise, and arm talent—highlighting him as the final piece needed to push Atlanta deep into the playoffs.

Yet, behind the scenes, the Falcons front office was clearly thinking long-term. By drafting Daniels, Atlanta ensured they have a dynamic, dual-threat quarterback waiting in the wings—potentially setting the stage for an uncomfortable quarterback controversy sooner rather than later.

“It’s not about being afraid of competition,” Cousins said. “I’ve had to fight for everything my entire career, from Washington to Minnesota. But you’d like some transparency when you’re committing to a new organization. That’s just being professional.”

Sources close to the team say Cousins was not involved in any pre-draft discussions about the team’s interest in drafting a quarterback. Falcons GM Terry Fontenot and head coach Raheem Morris have remained largely quiet about the decision-making process, though Morris did address the media briefly last week.

“We believe in building a strong, competitive quarterback room,” Morris said. “Kirk is our starter. He’s a pro. But we’re thinking about the future of this team too.”

While Cousins is still locked in as the starter for 2025, tensions could boil beneath the surface if Daniels impresses during training camp or preseason action. For now, Cousins is committed to winning and earning the trust of his new teammates and fans.

“This is the NFL,” Cousins said. “You show up, you work hard, and you lead. That’s what I’m here to do.”

Whether this bold move by the Falcons will lead to long-term success or cause internal friction remains to be seen. But one thing is clear—Kirk Cousins isn’t backing down, and Atlanta’s quarterback room is now one of the most talked-about in the league.
