Detroit Lions Bolster Secondary with Veteran CB D.J. Reed

Posted on March 23, 2025 by admin

Big news for Detroit Lions fans! The team has made a strong move in free agency, agreeing to a contract with veteran cornerback D.J. Reed. This comes as a much-needed addition after the departure of Carlton Davis. The Lions’ defense is shaping up to be a force, and Reed’s presence only strengthens their secondary.

D.J. Reed, 28, has spent the last three seasons locking down receivers for the New York Jets, following earlier stints with the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks. He has built a reputation as a solid No. 2 cornerback, someone who can handle a high volume of targets without giving up big plays. According to Pro Football Focus, he has allowed the lowest passer rating (79.8) in primary coverage since 2020 among defensive backs with at least 300 targets. That’s a level of consistency that any team would love to have in their secondary.

What makes Reed an ideal fit for Detroit’s defense? First, he’s a fighter. He’s not just about shutting down the passing game—he’s also a reliable tackler who isn’t afraid to get involved in stopping the run. That kind of versatility aligns perfectly with the tough, aggressive style the Lions demand from their defensive backs.

Reed will join a promising secondary featuring second-year starter Terrion Arnold, rookie Ennis Rakestraw Jr., and nickel corner Amik Robertson. This move also allows Brian Branch to shift back into his natural safety role, where he was originally playing before injuries forced him to adjust last season. The Lions are ensuring they have depth, talent, and experience at one of the most crucial positions on the field.

Of course, the success of Detroit’s defense doesn’t just depend on the secondary. A key factor will be the health and impact of their pass rush, led by Aidan Hutchinson and Alim McNeill. If those stars can stay on the field and the team adds another pass rusher, the Lions could be looking at one of the most well-rounded defensive units in the league.

With Reed now in the fold, Detroit continues to show they are serious about contending. The Lions are not just filling holes—they are upgrading, making strategic moves that could pay off in a big way in the upcoming season. Stay tuned, because this team is building something special!
