Cleveland Browns eye potential future star Joe Milton with $1.25M cap hit as Deshaun Watson reeling from Achilles injury leaves team in turmoil

Posted on March 24, 2025 by admin

Team Challenges

With the team’s starting quarterback sidelined indefinitely following a re-tear of his Achilles, Cleveland faces a challenging period. The roster now relies on Kenny Pickett as the only healthy signal-caller, creating an immediate need for quarterback depth and long-term stability.

Evaluating the Quarterback Landscape

The organization is exploring several avenues as it contemplates its quarterback future. One strategy involves using the No. 2 overall pick to select promising talents such as Miami’s Cam Ward or Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders. Alternatively, the Browns could opt for the best available player—possibly an Edge rusher or a versatile receiver/defensive back—and then seek an additional quarterback during the offseason to complement Pickett. In the midst of these discussions, the team is also examining the potential of a young quarterback from New England.

Prospects and Cap Considerations

The quarterback in question is a former sixth-round selection who now presents a unique financial proposition. With cap hits of less than $1.25 million for each of the next three seasons, he offers a low-risk investment compared to the substantial dead cap burden looming from the injured starter. Though not necessarily viewed as an immediate starter, his impressive arm talent makes him an attractive lottery ticket—a move that could pay dividends if the team decides to wait for a deeper quarterback class in the future.

On-Field Performance and Background

During limited playing time in the 2024 season, this young quarterback has demonstrated his potential. Although he spent most of the season backing up more established options, he delivered a notable performance in the closing game, where he completed 22 of 29 passes for 241 yards and accounted for two touchdowns. His collegiate career, spanning stints at Tennessee and Michigan, saw him accumulate over 5,300 passing yards while throwing 37 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, laying a solid foundation for his professional contributions.

Competitive Environment

Beyond Cleveland’s interest, several other teams are also evaluating his prospects. While he is not expected to be the guaranteed future starter immediately, his combination of financial viability and on-field potential is drawing attention from multiple fronts. The move could provide Cleveland with both a short-term solution and a long-term asset in their evolving quarterback situation.
