One of the major developments of the 2025 offseason for the Chiefs has been the status of right guard Trey Smith.
Kansas City placed the franchise tag on Smith back in February, and he signed it on March 9. The next step between the two sides will be attempting to work out a long-term contract extension.
There are several different direction they could go if they can’t reach an agreement. The Chiefs could trade Smith, or he can play on the tag during the 2025 season. Kansas City could then opt to tag him again during the 2026 offseason.
Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins is the only other player in the NFL to receive the franchise tag in 2025, recently landing a four-year, $115 million extension. Smith joined Kay Adams on her FanDuel morning show “Up and Adams” on Monday, and Adams asked Smith if he thinks he will secure a long-term deal with K.C. like Higgins was able to with Cincinnati.
“Shoutout to Tee Higgins, man,” Smith said. “Two Tennessee boys, I think we were in the same high school class, too. Really cool to see Tee getting paid. Ultimately, I can only focus on working out and training. I love Kansas City, it’s my home. I love the Chiefs. The fans in Kansas City are some of the best people I’ve ever been around. Ultimately, I would love to stay there. That’s my plan.”
Hopefully the Chiefs and Smith can work out an extension that works for both sides. Smith is one of the best in the league at his position and is in his prime at just 25-years-old. He was named to the PFWA All-rookie Team in 2021, the Pro Bowl in 2024, and is a two-time Super Bowl champion. Keeping him next to his good friend, center Creed Humphrey, will keep the interior of K.C.’s offensive line strong.
