The Indianapolis Colts have a quarterback competition currently set to take place this offseason. Right now it is set to be between Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones, but after the 2025 NFL Draft the competition could end up including another quarterback.

After a recent visit, the Colts seem to have interest in Quinn Ewers. If Ewers gets drafted by the Colts, then he has what it takes to secure the starting job.
Quinn Ewers Will be The Indianapolis Colts Starting Quarterback
Quinn Ewers is coming off a successful season with the Texas Longhorns, even leading them to the College Football Playoffs. Yet, Ewers has seen his stock drop, and isn’t being considered until roughly round three. In this case, this helps Indianapolis as they can get a quality starter to lead the team later in the draft.
Before losing at why Ewers will win the starting job, looking at how Jones and Richardson won’t win it is necessary.
Why Anthony Richardson Won’t be the Colts’ Starter
Richardson was drafted by the Colts in the 2023 NFL Draft class with the fourth overall pick. After going through a quarterback carousel after Andrew Luck’s retirement, Richardson was supposed to be the quarterback to end that. Instead, it has continued. Richardson showed promised to start his rookie season but ultimately it was cut short due to a shoulder injury, leaving Richardson to finish with just 577 yards and three touchdowns.
Upon returning in 2024, Richardson struggled coming back and showed little growth. While missing time with more injuries didn’t’ help, and then him being benched stalled his growth, Richardson’s overall play was still sporadic leading to him passing for just 1,814 yards and eight touchdowns while having 12 interceptions. For Richardson, this is far from ideal, and the Colts’ organization is losing faith in him. He has this offseason to try to turn it around but at the end of the day he is still a developmental quarterback.
Richardson needs time and the right coaching to advance his skills, and that development won’t happen just over this offseason like the Colts need it to.
Why Daniel Jones Won’t be the Colts’ Starter
Just before the trade deadline last season Daniel Jones was traded from the New York Giants to the Minnesota Vikings due to his bad play in New York. While sitting behind Darnold and learning on the sidelines from Kevin O’Connell should’ve helped, Jones is still not a refined passer either. With Jones, he either under throws receivers, or overthrows them, rarely ever having consistent on-target throws, an issue he is still having after six years in the NFL.
If the Colts want to win, they have to get a better passer under center for the 2025 season, and Jones’ ball security with 48 interceptions and 51 fumbles does not instill confidence.
Why Quinn Ewers Will Win the Starting Job
Quinn Ewers would still have to prove it at the NFL level, but he did show glimpses of having the tools to start in college. Ewers did see a decline in his 2024 production, but he was also battling injuries. Despite this, Ewers showcased the same work ethic on and off the field to better himself whether from a progression standpoint, or reading coverages.
Ewers would finish his three years at Texas with 9,103 yards and 67 touchdowns with just 24 interceptions. When he is in a rhythm, Ewers looks refined with his skills, being able to get the ball out quickly and accurately. The pocket mobility of Ewers and ability to throw off platform would be beneficial in Shane Steichen’s offensive system.
With the upside that Ewers has, if he is drafted by the Colts he will win the starting job for the 2025 season.
