Lions Predicted to Cut Ties With 50-Game Cornerback With 124 Total Carrier Tackles

Posted on April 13, 2025 by admin

The Detroit Lions added experienced cornerback Avonte Maddox to their roster this offseason in an effort to bolster their secondary. However, this acquisition could potentially result in another cornerback, Amik Robertson, being placed on the trade block, according to a recent prediction by Fox Sports analyst Ralph Vacchiano.

Vacchiano recently compiled a list of one trade candidate for each NFL team ahead of the draft, and he pointed to Robertson as a player who may not be in Detroit’s long-term plans—despite joining the team as a free agent just a season ago.

Robertson’s Position on Shaky Ground

Injuries significantly affected the Lions’ defense last year, particularly in the secondary. While depth players like Robertson stepped up when needed, his overall role remained limited. This, combined with the fact that he’s entering the final year of his contract, may make him expendable.

Vacchiano emphasized that while the Lions might be hesitant to thin their defensive depth, Robertson’s status as a rotational player and not a full-time starter could make him a prime trade candidate.

“Given all the injuries they endured on defense in 2023, Detroit may want to keep as many bodies as possible. But Robertson’s on an expiring deal and doesn’t seem to be viewed as more than a slot corner,” he explained.

Maddox’s arrival could further diminish Robertson’s spot on the roster. After Carlton Davis departed in free agency, the Lions opted to bring in D.J. Reed rather than promote Robertson to a larger role. The subsequent signing of Maddox—who previously played as a nickelback for the Eagles—only underscores Robertson’s precarious standing.

“In today’s NFL, every team is looking for a reliable third corner,” Vacchiano added. “But if the Lions are leaning toward Maddox for that role, Robertson might become a trade piece.”

Robertson suited up for every game last season, starting four of them. He finished the year with 50 tackles and eight passes defensed. Before coming to Detroit, he made 21 starts over three seasons with the Raiders.

Lions Eyeing Draft-Day Trade Possibilities

While Vacchiano didn’t mention who Detroit might target in a trade, others speculate the team may be considering a move up the draft board—potentially using Robertson as part of a package to improve their draft position.

Russell Brown from USA Today’s Lions Wire floated the idea that Detroit could look to trade into the middle of the first round, specifically mentioning the No. 15 pick held by the Atlanta Falcons, in hopes of landing an edge rusher.

“If Detroit trades up, it’s probably for a defensive end,” Brown noted. “Names like Mykel Williams out of Georgia or Shemar Stewart from Texas A&M could be in play. Both could make an immediate impact on the Lions’ defensive front. It’s unlikely either player will still be on the board at No. 28, so a trade may be necessary to land one.
