In a surprise announcement that’s electrifying both the sports and entertainment worlds, NFL Hall of Famer and longtime FOX Sports analyst Howie Long is stepping away from the broadcast booth — and heading straight back to Hollywood.
The former defensive end turned commentator is set to star in and executive-produce a high-octane action film franchise titled “Gridiron Protocol,” marking his return to the big screen more than two decades after his cult-favorite movie Firestorm.
“I’ve been in stadiums, locker rooms, and studios for most of my life — now it’s time to shake things up,” Long said in a statement. “Gridiron Protocol is a story I’ve been wanting to tell for years. It’s gritty, physical, and personal. Think playbook meets black ops.”
According to production insiders, the film follows a retired football legend with a secret past as a covert military operative, who is pulled back into action when a deadly conspiracy threatens the world — starting with his hometown team. Set against the backdrop of urban stadiums, shadowy locker rooms, and high-stakes espionage, the film promises explosive stunts, sharp one-liners, and a hero with both brains and brawn.
From the Field to the Film Set
Fans may recall Long’s brief but memorable Hollywood stint in the late ’90s, when he starred in Firestorm, an action thriller that has since gained cult status. While he opted to focus on sports broadcasting and family life in the years that followed, insiders say Long has been quietly working with top-tier stunt coordinators and acting coaches for the past 18 months, preparing for his cinematic comeback.
“People forget that Howie has always had movie-star presence,” says one studio executive tied to the project. “Now, he’s combining decades of discipline, charisma, and physicality — and bringing something totally fresh to the action genre.”
Big Plans, Bigger Expectations
The first film in the Gridiron Protocol series is set to begin production this fall, with a major streaming platform already in talks for an exclusive release. Merchandise, a video game adaptation, and even a comic book spin-off are reportedly in development.
Long is also planning a limited docuseries to accompany the release, chronicling his return to film, his rigorous training regimen, and behind-the-scenes insights from his NFL days.
