Lions GM Shuts Down Hopes of Former Player’s Return

As the Detroit Lions gear up for the upcoming NFL Draft, general manager Brad Holmes addressed the media on April 17, and in doing so, he cast doubt on the possibility of a fan-favorite making a comeback.

It’s always tough for fans when a beloved player leaves—whether it’s through a trade, free agency, or contract issues. One such player still lingering in the minds of Detroit supporters is Za’Darius Smith. Acquired midseason last year to bolster a banged-up defensive line, Smith made an immediate impact, recording nine sacks and quickly becoming a standout on the field.

Off the field, he seemed to embrace Detroit as well, even sparking a high-profile relationship with local rapper Kash Doll. So when the Lions released him before the start of free agency, it left many fans confused and hopeful for a reunion.

However, during his recent press conference, Holmes made it clear that a return doesn’t seem to be on the table at the moment. “We haven’t had any conversations since the league meetings,” Holmes stated. “If there was any change, his agent would reach out to us.”

With Smith unlikely to return, the Lions are exploring other options to support star edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson. When asked about the potential of drafting another pass rusher, Holmes acknowledged the depth at that position in this year’s class. “There are definitely some strong edge guys in this draft. Some could be gone by our pick, some might still be available, and there’s also a possibility to trade down.”

As always, Holmes emphasized that Detroit doesn’t make roster moves strictly based on positional needs. Instead, the team focuses on overall value and fit, a strategy that’s helped transform the team in recent seasons. “Holmes has earned the benefit of the doubt with how far he’s brought this roster,” one analyst noted.

One intriguing option on the radar is Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson. The veteran pass rusher led the league with 17.5 sacks last season and has been one of the most productive players at his position in recent years. Only stars like T.J. Watt and Myles Garrett have more sacks since 2020 than Hendrickson, who boasts 70.5 in that span.

Still, for many Lions fans, the ideal scenario would be Smith suiting up in Honolulu blue once again. But based on the latest comments from the front office, that dream seems unlikely—at least for now.
