RALEIGH, NC – Game 3 between the Hurricanes and [Opponent] was already a powder keg—but it erupted late in the second period when head coach Rod Brind’Amour lost it over a brutal missed call that could shift the entire series.
With under a minute left in the second, a clear high stick from [Opponent Player] caught Sebastian Aho across the visor, dropping the Hurricanes star to the ice. Blood. Fans screaming. Everyone in PNC Arena saw it—except the officials.
No penalty.
That’s when Brind’Amour exploded.
The usually composed coach launched into a tirade from behind the bench, furiously yelling at the referees as fans showered the ice with boos. Cameras caught Brind’Amour mouthing: “Are you kidding me? That’s a joke!” while slamming his hand against the glass.
Moments later, during the intermission interview, he didn’t hold back.
> “You tell me how they miss that? It’s right in front of them. It’s a playoff game. That’s embarrassing,” Brind’Amour said, voice shaking with fury. “These guys battle their hearts out and get nothing for it.”
Social Media Erupted
Within minutes, #FreeRod and #BlownCall were trending across X (formerly Twitter). Even former NHLers chimed in:
> “Rod’s got every right to be furious. That’s a textbook double-minor. Brutal miss.” – Paul Bissonnette
> “If that call’s made, it’s a different game. Period.” – Kevin Weekes
Turning Point?
At that point, the ‘Canes were down 2–1, and the non-call robbed them of a crucial power play. The momentum swung hard the other way as [Opponent] capitalized in the third with another goal to seal a 3–1 win and a 2–1 series lead.
The NHL hasn’t issued an official statement, but you can bet Brind’Amour’s wallet is about to be a few thousand lighter after that outburst. Still, Canes fans are standing behind their coach—and demanding accountability.
