The dream is becoming reality for one Ohio native.

Former AAA Ohio Blue Jackets forward Cohen Hoening was selected 6th overall in Phase 2 of the 2025 NCDC Draft, marking a massive moment for both the rising star and the organization that helped shape his game.

The NCDC (National Collegiate Development Conference), one of the premier Tier II junior leagues in the U.S., is known for developing high-level talent bound for NCAA programs and beyond. Being drafted in the top 10 is no small feat — and for Hoening, it’s just the next step in a journey that’s gaining serious momentum.

“Honestly, I’m still speechless,” Hoening told us just hours after hearing his name called. “It’s something I’ve worked for since I first laced up skates. Being part of the Blue Jackets program taught me how to be a competitor. I’m ready for the next level.”

A Leader on and off the Ice

During his time with the AAA Ohio Blue Jackets, Hoening made a name for himself as a two-way force with explosive speed and high hockey IQ. Coaches praised his dedication, discipline, and natural leadership — qualities that made him stand out during a highly competitive draft process.

“Cohen’s work ethic is off the charts,” said one coach from the Blue Jackets system. “He’s the kind of kid you want in your locker room. Tough, focused, and humble.”

Hoening notched impressive stats in his final AAA season, including multiple game-winning goals and a plus-minus rating that had scouts taking serious notice.

What’s Next?

With the NCDC spotlight now shining on him, Hoening is expected to make an immediate impact. Teams in the league are increasingly leaning on young, versatile forwards who can contribute on special teams and adapt quickly to fast-paced play — exactly the kind of game Cohen brings.

“This is just the beginning,” he said. “I know there’s a lot of work ahead, but I’m hungry. I’m chasing something bigger.”

And what about the big dream?

“NHL. That’s the goal,” he said with a smile. “One step at a time. But yeah — #CBJ is the dream.”

A Win for Ohio Hockey

For the Ohio Blue Jackets AAA program, Hoening’s selection is a major badge of honor. It reinforces their status as a development powerhouse capable of producing top-tier talent — and it’s bound to inspire the next wave of young skaters in the Buckeye State.

Cohen Hoening’s story is far from over — in fact, it’s just heating up. And if today’s draft was any indication, the hockey world better keep a close eye on this rising star.

Stay tuned for more exclusive interviews and updates as Hoening begins his journey in the NCDC
