WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Washington Capitals are set to immortalize their greatest player in bronze.

In a stunning announcement that sent shockwaves through the NHL community, the Capitals have confirmed plans to unveil a life-sized statue of Alex Ovechkin—arguably the greatest goal scorer in NHL history and a living legend who transformed the identity of the franchise. The statue will stand proudly outside Capital One Arena, joining the elite ranks of North American sports icons honored by their teams in permanent form.

Work on the tribute is scheduled to commence in early fall, with the unveiling tentatively planned for the start of the 2025–26 NHL season.

“Alex Ovechkin is more than just a hockey player,” said Monumental Sports & Entertainment CEO Ted Leonsis. “He’s a symbol of excellence, perseverance, and passion. This statue will be a beacon for fans, players, and the entire city of Washington, representing the heart and soul of Capitals hockey.”

The statue will be sculpted by a renowned artist specializing in sports figures and will depict Ovechkin mid-slapshot—an homage to the very move that became his trademark. Early concept art reveals a dynamic pose, with Ovechkin’s fierce expression captured in incredible detail, evoking the energy that defined his prime.

Ovechkin, now in the twilight years of his career, was visibly moved by the announcement.

“I never dreamed of something like this,” said the Capitals captain. “To have a statue in this city—it’s emotional. This is for the fans, my teammates, and my family. I am proud to have spent my career here.”

The Capitals plan to incorporate the statue into a larger “Legends Plaza,” which will also feature interactive exhibits chronicling the team’s history, a hall of records, and a timeline wall celebrating milestones in Ovechkin’s career—from his 2004 draft day to the 2018 Stanley Cup win.

The project is already receiving strong support from fans and local officials. Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser praised the decision, calling it “a fitting tribute to an athlete who brought global recognition and countless memories to our city.”

For many, the statue is not just about honoring the past—it’s about inspiring the future. Young Capitals players and fans alike will now have a permanent reminder of what is possible with hard work, loyalty, and leadership
